Great Grapes

My earliest memories of grapes from the grape arbor located at my granny house where she was born just four blocks away from where I grew up. Every summer we would walk to the old house, baskets in hand, and pick plump concord grapes that hung from metal pipes fashioned into a trellis over a stone patio. Granny and I would then pluck the grapes free from their clusters, rinse them and pack old pillow cases full. Crushing them with our hands and hanging them in up to drip into large basins for home made concord grape juice.
Purple and red grapes, like the concord grape we used to make Granny favorite juice form, not only taste delicious but they have many healthy benefits. The skin of the red grape is also the source for saponins, which works as a cholesterol inhibitor. Its concentration in red wine is 10 times higher than in white wine, making red grapes a go-to as a natural anti-oxidant rich boost. Resveratrol, another vital antioxidant found in the skin of red or purple grapes, is being studied for it’s potential benefits for cancer patients and treatment of such neurological diseases as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
