WILL COMMUNITY BOARD 8 LET 82nd STREET BE A YEAR ‘ROUND MARKET?
It’s a question that didn’t get answered at this week’s Street Fairs Committee meeting and we should be grateful it wasn’t.
Citing such concerns as farmers competing with local bricks-and-mortar enterprises, farmers not paying city taxes, that the two farmers occupying space along the 82nd Street curb obstructed pedestrian traffic and that food not grown within city boundaries couldn’t accurately be termed “local”, committee members referred the final decision to the CB8’s Full Board Meeting next Wednesday, November 17th, NY Blood Center, 310 East 67th, 6:30 p.m.
So, here’s the deal, friends… If you want a 12-month market you’re going to have to make an effort to get it… That effort being showing up at the Blood Center and speaking in market’s support. Failing that, even if you sent one last week, forward an enthusiastic email of stating your support to the Community Board at INFO@CB8M.COM.
All over the city, people are begging for markets, yet here on the Upper East Side we’ve encountered obstruction at virtually every turn… Establishing our markets, keeping them, adding a week or two to their annual schedule.
As in the past, we’ll only prevail if the community makes its will known. And head count is extremely determinative in these matters. So show up or write, yes?
