Even with celiac disease, you can have your cake and eat it, too

I don’t spend a lot of time walking around the East Village (even though it is a great part of the city), but I know I will be since finding Tu-lu’s Gluten-Free Bakery. Located at 338 East 11th Street between busy First and Second Avenues, Tu-Lu’s is a healthy, calm place to stop for a snack or to take some treats home with you (I sure did!).
The delicious baked goods are made in a dedicated gluten-free facility, which is, of course, so important for people who live with celiac disease. I was delighted to find many of the products are also vegan. The problem people face when at Tu-lu’s is not about the ingredients used in the baked goods, it is which ones to buy (meaning some yummy treats get left behind).
Tu-lu’s Gluten-Free Bakery opened its doors on 11th Street in January 2010. It’s founder, Tully, a lovely young woman from Memphis, TN, is gluten-intolerant and understands the life-changing habits people need to make once they receive that diagnosis. Like many, she first felt deprived when she thought she couldn’t eat pizza, pasta and baked goods. She soon found healthy alternatives for most foods, but was still missing the joy and satisfaction of a delicious cookie or cupcake. By taking matters into her own hands (literally), she experimented in her kitchen with various flours and recipes and created tasty treats without gluten. She didn’t miss the wheat flour and knew no one else would either! Tully is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Austin, TX. She did an internship at Gramery Tavern and worked for two gourmet catering companies in New York City before beginning her studies for a master’s degree in the Foods Studies program at NYU.
Her wish for her customers – that they enjoy eating the baked goods and much as she enjoys making them. Trust me, whether you are gluten-intolerant or not, a stop at Tu-lu’s Gluten-Free Bakery will be worth it! And, for those who don’t live in NYC, the bakery does ship nationwide (some international routes may be possible).
